Zionism Unsettled: The Conversation Continues
November 10, 2014 — The Israel Palestine-Mission Network of the Presbyterian Church (USA) is pleased to announce that the congregational study document Zionism Unsettled: A Congregational Study Guide (ZU) is available on our website.
For those who wish to continue their study in depth, Zionism and the Quest for Justice in the Holy Land (ZQ), including a forward by Walter Breuggemann, has been recently published by Pickwick Publications. This book, upon which ZU is based, is now available from Friends of Sabeel North America or through Amazon in either print or electronic editions.
Those who are leading or taking classes using either ZU or ZQ may also be interested in a number articles that have appeared over the spring and summer about Zionism. Suddenly, the debate about Zionism has taken center stage within the American Jewish Community. Below are a few examples which may contribute to your conversations:
Professor Andrew Levine, a senior scholar at the Institute for Policy Studies, discusses the problems with the concept of liberal Zionism.
Allan Brownfield of the American Council for Judaism describes the growing resistance to Zionism’s corrupting influence on American Jewish life.
Rabbi Michael Lerner, editor of Tikkun Magazine, calls on Jews and others to mourn for a Judaism “that is being murdered by Israel and its worshippers around the world.”
Sarah Posner describes “The Collapse of the American Jewish Center.”
Zachary Foster asks “Where does Zionism end and Judaism begin?”
Rania Khalek discusses “How liberal Zionists enable Israel’s genocidal ambitions,” in the wake of the recent invasion of Gaza.
Anthony Lerman analyzes “The End of Liberal Zionism,” stating, “The only Zionism of any consequence today is xenophobic and exclusionary, a Jewish ethno-nationalism inspired by religious messianism.”
Israeli filmmaker Lia Tarachansky discusses her recent documentary entitled On the Side of the Road. She describes her process of socialization into Zionismand her struggle to free herself from the “collective amnesia” that allow Zionists to deny the suffering that Israel has inflicted on Palestinians for decades. Tarachansky concludes that Israel needs help from the international community to delegitimize Zionism and recover from its collective denial of history.
